The city of Lincoln is where it is because of salt deposits. The area known as Chester Basin, Great Basin and Gregory Basin is where the salt was located.
Water from Oak Creek was diverted into Gregory Basin to form a salt lake.

The water was drained in the 1950's to make room for the interstate construction. You can still see evidence of salt in the satellite pictures of the area between the interstate and the airport.
