History:
The Cliff House began as a 20-room hotel, built in 1874 by Thomas T. Shurtleff and William A. Webster.
In 1876 it was purchased by Edward E. Nichols, who expanded it several times, eventually to over 200 rooms.
It was later taken over by Nichols' son, Edward E. Nichols Jr.
It continued to operate as a hotel until the 1960s, when it was converted to apartments. It suffered a major fire in 1982, after which it sat vacant for 16 years.
In 1999 it re-opened, once again as a premier luxury resort hotel.
Nichols Sr. and Jr. both served terms as mayor of Manitou Springs.
