Sideling Hill Tunnel (Abandoned)

USA / Pennsylvania / Valley-Hi /
tunnel, abandoned / shut down, turnpike, movie / film / TV location

This abandoned section of the PA Turnpike follows an old South Pennsylvania Railroad alignment (an abandoned rail route owned by Cornelius Vanderbuilt, the owner of the former New York Central Railroad). Increasing traffic on the road lead to a bottleneck in the two-lane tunnel, and rather than bore new lanes into Sideling Hill, the Turnpike Commission routed a new highway over the mountain in 1960. Visitors may now ride their bikes through the once off-limits tunnel, as the property was aquired by Southern Alleghenies Conservancy in 2004. The Conservancy has dubbed this new trail 'The Bike Pike'.

The Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike was used for much of production of the movie "The Road", with evidence shown at the eastern portal of the Sideling Hill Tunnel,as it can be seen in the second picture.
