This provides a huge clue as to why the motorway after the current J5 is so poor - the M53 was actually supposed to head south here, and run parallel to the A550 until reaching Ewloe.
A bridge existed on this site until around 1999-2000. The route from here to the current J5 are actually the sliproads to the former M531.
