The lighthouse was constructed in 1873 on the project developed by engineer Zozino Barrozo. In that days lighthouse signalised and informed all ships going in Salvador about sandbanks located in the area. Lighthouse has 21 meters of hight and the structyre of the tower is made from cast iron. Originally the lighthouse was painted in purple colour, because the white flashing light on the top of the dark tower was highly visible from the long distance. In 1939 the lighthouse was recoloured and recieved the pattern of horizontal white and orange bands and in 1950 the visual style has changed again and today we can see the tower colored in white and red.
