Opened as MGM Grand in 1973, built by Kirk Kerkorian. On the morning of November 21, 1980 a fire broke out in a deli restaurant near the casino. The fire remains the worst disaster in Nevada history with 87 fatalities.

Kerkorian sold the hotel to Bally's in 1986 and it was renamed Bally's Las Vegas. Kerkorian moved his MGM operation down the strip to the old Marina Hotel, which became the new MGM Grand.

The hotel was renamed Horseshoe Las Vegas in 2022.

It has been featured in numerous films, including "Honeymoon in Vegas", "Rocky IV" and "Leaving Las Vegas".
