Tulaigh Charnáin (?) 'hillock of the cairn, or heap of stones'

More Details

This name appears to be made up of tulach 'hillock' and carnán 'mound'. Some of the alias forms such as Ballytullycarnan alias Listyagnew, suggest that this place was also known as Lios Tí Uí Ghnímh, i.e. 'fort / enclosure of the house of Ó Gnímh', a Gaelic bardic family now more commonly known by the anglicized form Agnew. Indeed in CPR 326a (c. 1618) we have mention of two people of this surname in the Ards, most notably 'Andrew Agnewe of Carnie [= mod. td. Kearney, Ballyphilip parish]'.
