Loch Móna 'lake of the bog or moor'
The townland of Loughmoney lies in the extreme north of the parish of Ballee. Its name is recorded early as 1183 when Lochmonne is referred to a grant from Bishop Malachy to the Abbey of Saint Patrick (Grant Bishop Malachy (EA) 163). The historical spellings of the place-name are fairly consistent (Loughmony 1603, Loughmoney 1627, Loghmoine 1635) and the most satisfactory interpretation of the place-name is Loch Móna 'lake of the bog', as suggested by the local informant John McGreevy in the Ordnance Survey Name Book of c.1830. The fairly large lake after which the townland is named lies on its western boundary.
