Tararua Wind Farm is located on the North Island of New Zealand, about 14 km directly east of central Palmerston North. It was constructed and commissioned in 3 stages. Stage 1 (1999) consists of 48 Vestas V47/660 (660-kW capacity) turbines and stage 2 (2004) consists of 55 V47/660's. Stage 3 (2007), constructed around the periphery of the older sections, consists of 31 Vestas V90/3000 (3000-kW) turbines. In total there are 134 turbines with a combined nominal capacity of 160.98 MW.
Tararua is currently (2020) the largest wind farm in New Zealand, both in terms of the number of turbines and the generating capacity. There are also proposals to upgrade/repower the older sections with 40 newer and bigger units, possibly in the 5000-kW range, capable of generating three times the energy of the 103 turbines they would replace.
