park, bank, island

This privately owned island features an extensive marsh system of approximately 65 acres where wetlands join maritime forest hammocks to create an idyllic home for river otter, deer, fox, muskrat, and the occasional bear. The island is also an important nesting area for more than 50 species of birds, including heron, osprey, wood duck, great horned owl, and pileated woodpeckers. Drs. Joseph and Elena Lea of Chapel Hill, NC purchased the land in 2003 and established the Lea Nature Preserve to help preserve the native plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life in coastal North Carolina.
