Part of the University of Michigan's College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, this museum has a collection of more than 100,000 artifacts from ancient Mediterranean and Near East cultures, as well as housing the University of Michigan Interdepartmental Program in Classical Art and Archaeology. Dedicated in 1891 as the Newberry Hall (a name still engraved on its front) in honor of Helen Newberry, the university leased Newberry Hall in 1921 for classroom space, housed its collection of ancient artifacts there from 1928, and purchased it outright in 1937. The museum was renamed in 1953, renovated in 1993-1994, and finally added on a large new wing in late 2009 to showcase more of the collection. It is one of the oldest buildings on the University of Michigan campus.
