Gary Comer (1927-2006) was the founder of Land's End clothing catalog, and grew up in Grand Crossing. When he returned to his old neighborhood, he was saddened by the crime and decay, and resolved to do something about it. This Youth Center, with it stunning architecture and clad in colorful tiles, is one of those things. Inside, the children and young adults of the neighborhood can learn, create and recreate in safety. The main group within is the South Shore Drill Team. It was finished in 2006, and Comer got to see it before he died.
