Nowadays it's the end of the line, but beyond the station traces of the old track are still visible. The line used to continue a fair old way beyond Treherbert, serving the top end of the valley and then going (via a tunnel through an intervening hill) as far as Swansea.
It was first opened on this site by the Taff Vale Railway in 1901, and was the connecting point of the Rhondda and Swansea Bay Railway with the collieries of the Rhondda Fawr.
