January 1, 1953. Celebrated country star Hank Williams is discovered dead in the back of his Cadillac at Burdett's Pure Oil Station in Oak Hill, West Virginia. He was being driven to a scheduled concert at Canton, Ohio by his chauffeur, 17-year old Charles Carr. They had departed Knoxville, Tennessee earlier in the day.

Circumstances surrounding Williams' death remain controversial to this day. Some versions indicate that Williams was found dead at an all night diner in Hilltop, WV several miles to the south. Others believe that he was dead before leaving Knoxville. However, it is positive that police were notified and became involved at this site in Oak Hill. Official cause of death was listed as heart failure.

Recent plans to turn the Pure Oil Station into a museum honoring the career of Williams fell apart and the owner of the site destroyed the building in 2006.
