The District Rajnandgaon came into existence on 26th Jan' 1973, by way of division of District Durg. The Rajnandgaon state was ruled by Somvanshis, Kalchuris and Marathas. The Rajnandgaon was originally named as Nandgram. The Palaces in the town of Rajnandgaon reveals its own tale of the rulers, their society & culture and the splendid tradition during that time. The contribution of Gajanan Madhav Muktibodh, Padumlal Punnalal Bakshi and Baldeo Prasad Mishra in the field of Hindi literature has a special mention. The District Kawardha was latter bifurcated from the District on 1st July 1998.The principal river of the District is Sheonath, a tributary of Mahanadi.The river originates in the border of Chowki block and flows in north eastern direction. The main tributaries of Sheonath are Kharkhara, Sonbarsa, Amner, Surhi, Karra, Murkati, Sankari, Fonk and Hanf. This city is known as cultural capital of Chhattisgarh State.Last ruler of this city Raja Digvijay Das was shot dead in 1956.His palace now houses Mahant Digvijay Das College,a reputed college for art and science streams.Rani Sagar Lake enhances the beauty of this city.There is a beautiful garden on the banks of Rani Sagar,Known as Treveni Parisar.Busts of three legends of Hindi literature:Gajanan Madhav Muktibodh, Padumlal Punnalal Bakshi and Baldeo Prasad Mishra who hailed from here, adorn Treveni Parisar Garden from where health conscious residents of this city start their day.
Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati (born 14 February 1960), the successor of Paramahamsa Satyananda, founder of Satyananda Yoga, who passed on the worldwide coordination of Satyananda Yoga to Swami Niranjanananda in 1988 was born in Rajnandgaon.Swami Niranjanananda is considered by his followers to be a yogi from birth, he as head of The Bihar School of Yoga,is showing the path of contentment and well being to his deciples in Europe and America.Satyananda Yog Ashram situated on the outskirts of the city is imparting training and running courses on YOGA.
