  • The Aussies stayed here during the famed 1983 America's Cup Races
  • John O'Brien was a New York banker, the son of an Irishman from Dublin who was active in the Irish Rebellion of 1798. John O'Brien purchased a seat on the NY Stock Exchange in 1844. He was successful in the brokerage and insurance business with his brother, William. Both were Catholic philanthropists.
  • My family rented a huge apartment there for e few summers in the mid and late '70s. Even though it had been subdivided and "renovated" you could still see the quality of the build, and many period details. We used the chapel as a dining room. I remember a stained glass alter area. I have fond memories of that place. Previously we rented for several summers in the late '60s / early '70s nearby on Ledge road at the Waves: John Russell Pope's home built on the ruins of a castle. Newport was unique back then in that you could rent in these magnificent cottages.
  • You still can in many of them!
