Formerly the NorthEast Auto Terminal (NEAT), this facility operated as a private auto import and export facility for several decades before it's purchase in 2008 by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Covering 130 acres and equipped with two ship berths, the Port Authority Marine Terminal has open vehicle storage areas, offices and processing buildings for the facilities two major tenants; BMW of America’s Port Jersey Vehicle Preparation Center and the remaining operations offices of the Northeast Auto Marine Terminal.

The location of the PA Auto Marine Terminal and it's relatively airdraft-free deepwater access for larger vessels led to the Port Authority announcing plans to convert the facility into a container terminal. Anticipating the needs of the planned and existing super-panamax containerships which will call New York Harbor upon the completion of the new Panama Canal Megalocks, NEAT was incrementally shut down and its share of the auto import/export market completely transferred to the Bayonne Auto Terminal and the Port Newark FAPS facility by 2011.
