Construction of E. H. Butler Library began in 1950, but soon after its completion, holdings quickly grew to exceed capacity. A major addition, consisting of four quadrants wrapped around the original core building, was added in 1970. The library currently shelves 530,000 books, more than 900,000 microforms, more than 20,000 audiovisual materials, and full-text articles from more than 20,000 journals.

Butler Library has almost 200 computers for student use. StudyQuad, the library's newest state-of-the-art study facility, provides a safe, well-lighted place for Buffalo State students, faculty, and staff to work late at night.
