The fortification was made in the year 1793, with the goal to control the ship-movements between the Volkerak and the Hollands. France attacked The Austrian-Hollands in that year. As the outcome aof a second battle near Neerwinden Holland stays under Austrian government. The Bataafse Republiek starts in 1975.
Under the second governmental period of Thorbecke the fortification was made stronger in 1862. From the year 1974 the fortification is part of the Stelling van het Hollandsch Diep en het Volkerak.
In 1915 the fortification was again upgraded, with weaponed concrete.
