Pellier Park is named after the father of the prune industry: Louis Pellier. Pellier established a nursery on this site called City Gardens in 1850. With the help of brothers Pierre and Jean, he introduced the French prune, "La Petite D'Agen," here in the winter of 1856. It was this variety that became the mainstay of the California prune industry-the backbone of San Jose's economy for more than 70 years.
