43rd WESSEX REGIMENT fought and gained this Vantage Point (OPERATION EPSOM) in July 1944 during the Battle for Normandie. Commemorating Monument is 400 metres NORTH.

  • So did the 11th Armoured...my Dad wouldn't talk about this.
  • The hill was (partially) captured during Operation Jupiter, on 10 an 11th of July 1944. It is true that it was captured during Operation Epsom in the closing days of June, two and a half weeks earlier, but it was the given up due to strong counterattacks by the Germans. This would come back to haunt the British in the July attack, as 43rd Wessex division would suffer badly to regain this position again.
