"Stag Hill," or simply "The Mountain" in local parlance. Traditional home of the Ramapo Mountain People, its primary (possibly only) inhabitants, clustered around Silver Lake. Until the 1950s access was only through Hillburn, NY, or the steep swichbacks of Geiger Rd., causing problems with firefighting (Mahwah trucks would have to leave New Jersey altogether to reach fires there) and school bus transportation. Eventually a fire station was built atop the mountain, and Mahwah constructed Stag Hill Rd. for better access. The road through Hillburn was eventually closed off, and Geiger Rd. was cut off by the construction of I-287 in the early 90s, leaving Stag Hill Rd. as the only access route.
