This is the location of the guard lock at Dam #5 on the C&O Canal at mile 106.6. The facility consisted of a guard wall to protect against high water, and the inlet lock, that passed canal traffic to and from the slack water above the dam. West travelling traffic re-entered the canal at Lock 45. This facility also allowed the controlled entry of feeder water into the canal to maintain water levels needed to operate the boats.
