Utilizing much of the area excavated by the US Military during the Second World War as part of the "Third Lock Program", the Atlantic Locks are a currently under-construction trio of lock chambers that will feature sliding gates and will be 1,400 ft/427 m long, 180ft/55m wide, and 60ft/18.3m deep.

The new locks will add a third lane of vessel traffic to the existing Panama Canal and unlike their smaller neighbors, will only permit one-way passage of vessels at a time. Designed to accommodate vessels up to 1,200ft/366m long by 160ft/ 49m wide, the Atlantic Locks will permit the all but the largest civilian and military vessels to to utilize the Panama Canal, and are slated to increase the total cargo throughput of the canal from 275 million tons to 600 million tons.
