Alexander Winchell (1824-1890 was professor of Physics (and later of Geology) at the University of Michigan, 1853-1872, and at Syracuse University, 1872-1877. As Chancellor and professor of Geology, he returned to Michigan University, 1879. Winchell was State Geologist of Michigan, 1859-1862 and again 1869-1871.
