Antennas K2 and K3 are the receiving portion of the "Pluton" deep space communication and planetary radar system. The system, which also includes a transmitter antenna 8.5 km to the southeast, was built in 1959-60 to communicate with Soviet spacecraft sent to Mars and Venus; it also performed some of the world's earliest radiolocations of planets.
