  • Anhangabau is a word that came from indian language, as it's usual with many places in Brazil. It means something like "bad spirit" (Anhangá or Anhangaba) and "water" (for a sound like "y" or "u" at the end of the word, as the indians used to nominate a creek or any stream of water). The original São Paulo village was on the hill at the east side of this place, and people used to come to this valley to wash clothes. Nowadays the river is hided by concrete and over it cars are passing through a tunel under the gardened area on the top where pedestrians circulate between the two sides of the actual "old center" of the city.
