Originally opened on 6th May 1905.
Closed in July 1994.
Hollymoor was used as an emergency hospital in World War I & II.
The Hospital used to occupy a very large site and was comprised of large garden areas, and "airing courts" as they were called. The site even had its own farm with livestock. All residents were required to work, and many staff used to either live within the hospital itself or in the surrounding outbuildings or local area in the early days. As time went by the surrounding land was sold off, but even in 1994 the area was considerable.
There are old stories of a tunnel which ran from Hollymoor Hospital to Rubery Hill Hospital. During my time working at the hospital I did discover a tunnel which ran for a considerable length underneath what is now a the housing estate on the former Hollymoor site. The tunnel carried heating pipes, but the age of the tunnel predated their installation so the original use of the tunnel is unknown. Lack of air and a large metal door prevented further exploration.
I have marked the rough area of the tunnel
