The magnificent Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion Cathedral overlooks the civic plaza. In 1639 the Jesuit missionary Bartolome Castano founded the mission, his name means `herb that grows under water'.

The original building is next to the modern cathedral and very little remains of that structure.
