Fort Fred Steele was named after Civil War Brevet Major General Frederick Steele by Richard Dodge. This historic Wyoming post was one of the three great forts established to protect the Union Pacific and its workers from marauding Indians. It is now a Wyoming state historic site.
The fort was established in June, 1868. It was abandoned by the military in 1886, but a small civilian village grew in its place providing services to the old Lincoln Highway.
