The massive twin-towered Catedral, rebuilt twice in the 1800's after it was detroyed by fire and earthquake, experienced severe damage again during the 2001 southern Peru earthquake. The cathedrals's ornate exterior reflects a great sense of pride for the Cercado district and Arequipa.
