Austal USA (Mobile, Alabama)

This is the main shipyard for Austal USA, a subsidiary company of Australian shipbuilder Austal. The company has made a name for itself in constructing Aluminium high-speed catamaran ferries and in recent years has become a supplier of high speed aluminum vessels to the US Military. The yard has been greatly expanded since this photo was taken, with the addition of a large covered drydock and vessel fabrication area to the North of the existing shed and now employs over 1,000 workers in the Mobile area.

Among Austal's recent (2011) achievements are the awarding of a 10-ship order for the US Navy's Independence Class of Littoral Combat Ships, which are a high-speed stealth trimaran design. The US Navy also chose Austal to be the construction site for the 10-member class of Joint High Speed Vessels (JHSV), based on an existing high speed ro-ro catamaran design.
