Mount Bachelor is a large basalt/andesite volcanic cone, which sits atop a larger and older shield volcano. Paleomagnetic data suggests that the eruptions which formed Mount Bachelor and associated features occurred in several episodes between 15,000 and 8,000 years ago. The volume of lava erupted from Mount Bachelor is estimated at 25 cubic kilometers. Glaciation has created a shallow bowl on the north side of the mountain.
The mountain is home to an outstanding ski resort, allowing skiers to go as high as 9065 ft (2763 m) summit.
