Ambur's name is derived from Amai ie. water creature tortoise.Once there might had lived plenty of tortoise so this place was called as Amaiyur.Its oldest inscription bearing Pallava Nrupathunga record was lying buried.Buried news was told when a search was taken about 15 years. In Ambur a Naganatha temple is located. A Jain Tirthankara stome is lying in the town.In 1749 AD a battle was taken place between the allies of Hyderabad Nizam in which Santha Sahib took part and Muhammad Ali.In the end the aged king Muhammad Ali died.-M.gandhi.Ambur is a town known for its leather workers. It manufactures high-end shoes for export around the world.
