The Erie Street Market is located in a building originally constructed in 1908 as Toledo's main food distribution center. Designed in the classic indoor farmer's market tradition, the 3 bay building was altered in 1929 when the City added an auditorium for exhibitions and public meetings. In the 1940s an outside farmer's market was added and in 1966 the indoor wholesale market was eliminated when the City converted the building into a warehouse for the Natural Resources Department.

In the early 1990s, with the success of markets in Cleveland and elsewhere, plans were made to revitalize the building. The Erie Street Market opened in 1997 and featured the Libbey's Glass factory Outlet as its main tenant. Also featured was an indoor food market, a craft market and an antique mall. Since its opening issues regarding parking and tenant mix have arisen. In addition, the craft market has been converted into an entertainment venue called the "Civic Theater".
