Tuz Golu is a saline lake occupying a huge area in the arid central plateau of Turkey, about 65 miles (105 km) northeast of Konya. It is the second largest lake in Turkey lying at an elevation of 2,970 feet (905 m) as a tectonic lake. Despite its huge area (580 sq miles or 1500 sq kms), for most of the year it is very shallow (between 0.5 - 1 metres), especially during dry summer months when the water evaporates in huge quantities leaving a crust of salt on the surface up to 30 centimeters thick.
