.
It is the largest lake inside Iran, with a surface area of approximately 5,200 km² (2,000 mile²). At its maximum extent, it is about 140 km (87 miles) long, and 55 km (34 miles) wide. Its deepest point is approximately 16 m (52 ft) deep. At the ancient and medieval era the lake was called Kaputan Tzov (which in Armenian language means "Blue Sea"). Over the past decades, the water level of the lake is drastically reduced. The lake disappears due to excessively irrigation. In 2016CE the lake has shrunk to a few percent of its' old size and become hyper-saline. Red bacteria now thrive in the waters and the lake appears to be red from Space.

Lake Orumiyeh, one of the world's largest salt lakes, has lost more than half its surface area in 20 years due to drought and the damming of rivers. A local MP says if the lake disappears it will leave behind 10bn tonnes of salt and displace millions of people.
