Lincoln Beach (closed) (New Orleans, Louisiana)

USA / Louisiana / New Orleans / New Orleans, Louisiana
abandoned / shut down, interesting place

Built in 1954 as a "colored" complement to Pontchartrain Beach to the west (though their rides were inferior, Lincoln Beach hosted a number of good musical acts), this amusement park closed just ten years later when Pontchartrain Beach was integrated. While it remained as a beachside area, it was left to rot in further decades. Most of the remaining structures were torn down in the mid-2000s but Katrina essentially put a halt to any redevelopment.

Comments

  • What did they have there? For rides.
  • The cleanest lake water is here. There have been talks of restoring Lincoln Beach.
  • There was talk of restoration pre-Katrina and many buildings were knocked down in anticipation. The storm halted all plans of construction and continued the destruction. Ten years ago there were a lot of graffiti-covered buildings, pools, a pier... As of 2012 little was left but the paving, parts of the buildings that once held the bathrooms, and part of a riverside walkway. The beach (which still has white sand imported when the amusement park was active), seems to be use, though the area is fenced off and bears 'no trespassing; signs.
