Supermarine Aviation Co. Ltd. Woolston Works 1938.
Spitfire fighters were designed and built here by a team led by Chief Designer R.J.Mitchell, designer of the pre-war Sneider Trophy winning Supermarine S6B seaplanes. During WW2 Spitfires fighters were made here until the factory was bombed by the Luftwaffe. Fortunately, Spitfire production had by then already moved to new purpose-built factories elsewhere, including one at Castle-Bromich, West Midlands. A memorial has been installed under the Itchen bridge.
