Safeway food stores was anchor tenant, but closed in the 1990s. Local residents petitioned for a new food store and with the covenants in place, no one was forthcoming. Petitions and plans to move Hastings library to here came to naught when the Forst Library Bequest meant that the former land would be lost to the city.
T&T Chinese merchants came in and quickly all the stores became oriented to the Chinese community. Chinese (Mainland) bookstore, Chinese medicine, Macau bakery, Fruit and Vegetable and so on.
