The Toronto Golf Club originated in 1876 on a 94 acre parcel of land located in East Toronto at Gerrard and Coxwell Streets. It is the third oldest golf club in North America. Faced with high taxes and encroaching urban congestion, in 1911 the club purchased 185 acres of land in Toronto Township along the banks of Etobicoke Creek. An 18 hole couse designed, after Sunningdale Golf Course near London England, by English golf architect, Harry Colt, was opened in 1912. The clubhouse was completed shortly thereafter in 1913.

A further 76 acres to the north of the property were acquired in 1919 and a 9 hole coursed designed by Howard Watson was opened in 1921.

A private club, The Toronto Golf Club continues to feature the 18 hole, par 70, 6,185 yard Colt course and the 9 hole, par 33, 2,495 yard Watson course.
