27 people died in a flood in 1965 when the population was around 1200. Roy Bean (who later became known as Judge Roy Bean) came to Sanderson and had a bar until he moved east to Langtry in the early 1900s.

Town was the setting of the novel and movie, No Country for Old Men. Population 861.

    The town was founded in 1882. Originally named Strawbridge by founder Cyrus W. “Charley” Wilson, the name was later changed in honor of railroad Engineer Joseph P. Sanderson.
