office building, skyscraper, abandoned / shut down, 1962_construction
Constructed in 1962 as the Humble Building (home of Humble Oil, an affiliate of Standard Oil Company of New Jersey) and later becoming Exxon Company USA (following Standard Oil's name change to Exxon), this building with distinct cantilevered shades has served as an oil and gas related building for decades. Exxon Co. USA managed the company's oil and gas interests in the USA, and following the merger of Mobil, the ExxonMobil Building (as it was known, except within the company) was the headquarters of two ExxonMobil upstream operating companies, the ExxonMobil Production Company and ExxonMobil Gas and Power Marketing Company. In February 2015, ExxonMobil moved out following construction of a new campus in Spring, Texas. Prior to being abandoned by ExxonMobil, it was the home of The Petroleum Club of Houston, located on the 43rd floor (penthouse) of the building.
