Terminal 1 of Kota Kinabalu International Airport is the main gateway into Malaysian Borneo, and hence, to Kinabalu Park, a well known World Heritage site. The current, very modern Terminal 1 was open to the public back in August 2008, as part of major extension and refurbishment works. Today, it is said that this terminal can serve 3200 passengers at one time. One of the distinct features of the new terminal building would be its aerofoil like designs.
The terminal building consists of 3 levels - the ground floor (level 1) is for arrivals, level 2 is where the airline offices are situated and level 3 is normally the most busiest, where travelers check in and depart. There are several duty free shops before and after immigration. Two lift lobbies serve those who require to get from one level to the other.
It is fairly easy to reach this airport via public transport - either by taxi or bus. When hailing a cab to KKIA, let the driver know which airline one is traveling on. Malaysia Airlines, MasWings, SilkAir, Royal Brunei and other airlines all operate at this terminal. Traveling to and fro this terminal via bus is a good option for those who are watchful of their budget. The Petagas/Putatan and Lok Kawi buses (no. 18 and 19) passes along the main road outside the terminal. One would just need to walk out across the carpark in the direction of the main road, and head to the bus stop near an intersection. A red and white mini-bus (van) will soon come along and take commuters to downtown.
