St. Martin's Cathedral

The Gothic cathedral with a nave and two side aisles, has been constructed in the 15th century over the ruins of one Romanesque church. On the tower dominates a golden copy of the crown of St. Stephen (Hungarian king ) of 300 Kg to 85 m of height and remembers the 19 coronations, celebrated in the Cathedral between 1563 and 1830. In the years 1732 - 34 archbishop Emmerich von Esterhazy made to connect the left nave with the baroque Chapel and consecrated to St John Elemosynarius. It moreover made to erect the greater altar to Austrian sculptor G.R. Donner. In the left nave is found the statue in lead of S. Martin (the work of Donner), that it is represented on a horse to whose feet a beggar asks aid. In the right nave a plate it remembers that Ludwig van Beethoven on 13 November 1835 directed here Missa sollemnis op. 123.
