Built in 1972, the building was named in honor of Clair J. Butterfield, a former chairman of the education department and acting president of Edinboro State College for seven months in 1966. Since its construction, it has housed classrooms and offices for the School of Education, including the office of the dean. The classrooms were recently upgraded for enhanced technology access.
