Venango County is located in western Pennsylvania about halfway between Pittsburgh and Erie. The county encompasses 675 square miles and includes the cities of Oil City and Franklin, nine boroughs and 20 townships. Venango County is classified as a sixth class county and is ranked 42nd in the state of 67 counties, with the population of 54,984. The County seat is located in the City of Franklin. The county was established in 1800 and the present courthouse was built in 1865.

Organized Mar 12, 1800 from Allegheny and Lycoming counties, it is named for the Venango River (now called French Creek), which flows through it; from an Indian term of uncertain origin, possibly from innungah 'a figure carved on a tree.'
