Built in 1969, the building was named in honor of Lyman H. Van Houten, who initially served as director of the Erie Branch of the Edinboro State Normal School from 1921 to 1928, and later as the 11th president of Edinboro State Teachers College from 1941 to 1954. Two large, ground-floor dining areas, Van Houten North and Van Houten South, are supplemented by the University Club, a private dining area for faculty and staff, and the first-floor President's Suite for receptions and special events. In 1998, the roof was replaced and the Universitiy Club was renovated. The main dining hall was renovated again in 2000, and an elevator was installed to enhance accessibility.
