Delivered by the Boeing Company to the US Air Force in 1958 as one of three highly specialized VIP transport aircraft, SAM 970 would see use by Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon during her career, despite being replaced as the prime Presidential Transport in 1962 by VC-137C SAM 26000, SAM 970 continued to serve as a backup Presidential aircraft and the prime transport aircraft for the Vice President and high-level VIPS until being retired from service in June of 1996. On loan from the National Museum of the United States Air Force, SAM 970 is now open to the public at the Museum of Flight.
