Constructed at the end of the 18th century, renovated in the 1820s after the fire and then rebuilt in 1881 by the architect A. E. Weber.

In this building was located a hotel, which changed its name frequently: "Leipzig", "Hotel Shore" and "Russia." As the Hotel "France", it was here that Jean-Baptiste Maurepas, together with Lucien Olivier founded the well-known restaurant called The Hermitage.

When it was the hotel "Russia" Lev Tolstoy often stopped here.

Until April 1901 in this building was the bookshop belonging to Ivan Sytin, who in 1883 founded a publishing company that specialized in producing cheap printed books in Russian and foreign classics for mass circulation.
